It all started in 1991, when right after college and wanting to make a little extra income, Dale started a little antique mall booth space selling eclectic items found at estate sales, garage sales and thrift stores. Then came the furniture and a paint brush.... and what started out of that booth space as an evening/weekend adventure, has turned into one of Kansas City's favorite sources for unique, hand-painted furniture!
But the business hasn't always been named reDeux...... in 1991, Plum Creek was the name of the booth space at an antique mall in Greenwood, Missouri. Over the next few years, the booth space got bigger and bigger and in 2000, Plum Creek expanded to the Mission Road Antique Mall in Prairie Village, Kansas. There, the Plum Creek name was dropped in favor of a name more reflective with the "Shabby Chic" decorating style - hence "Shades of Shabby" was born! "Shades of Shabby" was an instant success at Mission Road Antique Mall and in early 2007, another expansion was launched to the quaint river town of Parkville, Missouri. Shades of Shabby opened shop in a little yellow 1888 Victorian cottage with a handful of other designers and the collection of spirited entrepreneurs was named "reDeux Interior Ideas." reDeux represents everything wonderful about the new "green" trend hitting the marketplace and with a few months, the Shades of Shabby name was dropped, reDeux Interior Ideas was changed to reDeux Home Furnishings and Steve became partner in the reDeux venture.
By summer 2008, with the national economy tanking and gas topping $4 per gallon, it simply wasn't feasible to operate a storefront seven days a week, so reDeux closed its Parkville location and focused on marketing the reDeux name to established businesses. First, booth space was acquired at the River Market Antique Mall in downtown Kansas City - an eclectic place to shop with 4-levels of amazing treasures. Then on to Abilene, Kansas where a year earlier, we had met the mother-daughter team at Cypress Bridge - a fantastic home furnishing store that specializes in hand-poured candles and trendy home accents - after all, they helped launch the "reDeux signature line" of jar and votive candles. The reDeux furniture was a natural fit and showcases beautifully in their store! In 2009, we expanded yet again out to Salina, Kansas to Martha & David, a store that features four unique boutique shops all under one roof! The "funkier" pieces of reDeux furniture fit this store to a tee! In November 2009, reDeux added another location to its ever-growing presence in the marketplace - The Rusty Chandelier in St. Joseph, Missouri. Located on the northern end of St. Jo, The Rusty Chandelier offers an eclectic mix of vintage, new items and recreated home decor.... another perfect fit for reDeux!
Also in 2009, reDeux began participating in some select "Shows" across the area....all three "Vintage Market Shows" in Zona Rosa, the "Farmstead Show" in Platte City and "The Sugarplum Festival" in St. Joseph. For 2010, all new furniture items reDeux creates will be offered to the public for the first time at each show we do! So check out the "Events Page" on our website for detailed information on where reDeux will be traveling to next!
So what's reDeux going to be about in 2010? Technology and new furniture ideas..... but that's all we can write about..... 2010 is happening right now..... are you plugged in to reDeux?
